A Disturbing Trend in our Society: the Lack of Trust in our Institutions – Part 2

Major corporations (big businesses) are losing the trust of consumers as well. Many score record quarterly performances on the backs of workers and then announce another round of layoffs to improve their profitability, leaving technological advances and the workers that are left to pick up the slack.

Chief executive officers who really have not improved the company get asked to leave and walk out the door with a 0 million going away compensation package. This all looks pretty unfair, not to mention stupid, to workers.

The term “corporate fat cats” represents an injustice to many workers. If the company board of directors had lost enough trust in the CEO to fire him, why pay him 0 million in compensation to leave?

Another private-equity firm paid its CEO 0 million for his services last year, more than a million dollars a day in income for every day of the year.

What can I say about the nation’s press? Only that it does not even publish the news anymore. Virtually every article is now “personal journalism” with the author’s views about news events, and the rest of newspapers and newscasts merely print or broadcast propaganda from their news sources.

Everyone from Hollywood publicists to politicians to the White House officials puts their own spin on all news events. There is no news reporting, only their reaction to news events based upon whatever pap they are peddling.

Politicians and presidential candidates are so caught up in carving out their own legacy and future prosperity they would not recognize or acknowledge the truth unless it served their own misguided purposes.

If you have not taken the time to notice, being a politician at the state or national level is one of the best and most lucrative jobs in America today.

There is so much carping and contentious infighting that nobody is responsible for anything that happens to the electorate.

There is also so much lying, cheating, stealing and immoral behavior going on that should anything good come from our elected officials it would be more by accident than design.

Politicians view it as a happy accident. They are too self-centered and self-absorbed in their own wonderfulness to worry about actually doing something rather than continually protecting their own power base and perceived influence.

I believe the majority of Americans are so disgusted with politicians today that they do not really give a crap about what they represent because they know that they are not representing them no matter which party they claim. Count me in that group.

Even the hallowed ivy halls of our educational institutions are taking a beating.

Too many tenured professors at many major colleges are not only practicing their liberal beliefs, they are preaching their permissive brand of liberalism. They stifle the exchange of ideas while promoting personal self-expression with little effort to recognize and teach basic, fundamental American values, including truth, integrity, responsibility, accountability and common sense.

Perhaps the only thing more important to them than actually teaching these basic, respected values is their own ego trip of self-righteousness. Many of these educated idiots believe that they can look at any major issue, decide what is right for everyone based solely on their intelligence, and then develop a social engineering program to make it happen.

Far too many of our college students are so brilliant when they graduate that they know exactly what is right for them and everyone else, what entitlements they are owed based on their continued breathing, and are quick to point out everything that is wrong everywhere.

The fact that they are not nearly as educated and literate as they think they are is just an aside. Like young people from every generation, you cannot share anything with them because they already know everything and can contribute little to the advancement of society until they grow up and embrace responsibility, accountability and integrity.

When you have tenured research professors working on health-related studies that are earning two, three and four times their salary from the same companies for whom they are doing the research. You realize there is no integrity left on campus as conflict and corruption has reached the highest levels of so-called leadership. No wonder there is little trust left in our educational institutions.

We look to our traditional churches to teach positive values, however, these churches are also losing trust among their followers.

It would appear that many of the leaders of these institutions will, like common prostitutes, sell themselves to the highest bidder. For many of these leaders, money will trump self-respect, integrity will give way to notoriety, and truth will become irrelevant to purpose.

If I sound like a social critic, I am. For any half-wit who will pay attention I am giving a clarion call to action. The good news is that you can rise above the current circumstances.

Those who would create distrust may sully the environment, but they cannot force you to follow their errant ways. You can live and act differently, and I advise you to do so.

This is the common responsibility of the readers and the journalists as well.

The first step to ensure this is to disregard all the false sensational news which is being promoted for personal and selfish gains. And you really don’t need the flowery and fancy words. Truth, my friend is what always prevails.

The ?Tea Party Movement’ Take 2

A lot of humor and ‘careless thought’ towards the silly political movements that arise here and there throughout our travels through the political seasons we experience in our lifetime.

However….

Let’s not pretend anymore that the tea party movement is harmless and at all in any way should be given a careless glance at.

The right to protest is one of our cherished American freedoms. But there is no right to vandalism, no right to threaten our elected officials’ lives. Spit on them or call them profane names.  This is simple mobbery and blatant disrespect.  Someone is going to get hurt unless those who lead the movement — and those who exploit it — start acting like responsible adults.  And I’ll be looking forward to the day.  Any of the readers of this remember coming back from the Vietnam War and experiencing the assorted ‘welcome party movements’?

It was Sarah Palin, a favored visitor tea party crowd, who used Facebook to target 20 Democrats who voted for health care reform, indicating their districts’ locations on a map with the cross hairs of a rifle scope. It was Palin who wrote on Twitter: “Commonsense Conservatives & lovers of America: ‘Don’t Retreat, Instead — RELOAD!  Check out Facebook for more on that.  Oh God in Heaven I hope she starts her TV show and stays right where she belongs, in Hollywood or back in Alaska, rather than just jumping ship for more publicity and celebrity ravings.

That anyone still listens to her is one of the most unfortunate consequences of online social media networking.

Of the reported vandalism from articles online:

“…Close to a dozen House Democrats have had to request additional security following Sunday’s health care vote. Someone left a coffin on the lawn of Rep. Russ Carnahan’s home in Missouri. Glass doors and windows were broken at the district offices of Reps. Louise Slaughter of New York and Gabrielle Gifford’s of Arizona. Vandals have damaged Democratic Party offices in Wichita, Rochester, N.Y., and Cincinnati. And Rep. Bart Stupak of Michigan, whose last-minute compromise on abortion funding guaranteed final passage of the reform act, has received a flood of abusive phone calls at his office and home. Someone faxed him a drawing of a noose. One voice mail, subsequently posted on the Internet, was left by a woman who wanted Stupak to know that ‘there are millions of people across the country who wish you ill.’ Another caller was more direct: ‘You’re dead. We know where you live. We’ll get you.’”

One would expect responsible right-wingers, Republican leaders and those in leadership that the Tea Party supposedly supports, to do everything in their power to lower the tone and the temperature.

Further research has brought forth more issues of concern, not just Political Trends:

“House Minority Leader John Boehner said on Fox News that “violence and threats are unacceptable.” Minority Whip Eric Cantor disclosed that he has received numerous threats in the past and that a bullet was fired through the window of his Richmond campaign office last week. Given all this, one would think these two might have intervened Sunday when fellow House Republicans were whipping up the angry tea party crowd at the Capitol.  And why?  Does this mean they themselves are ‘out of ammunition’ when it comes to an attempt to de-throne the current leader?  Why not work to make things better rather than making thing messier?”

But this strikes me, and probably will strike others, as ignorant and less than immature not withstanding the felonies that seem to have been committed along the way. The tea party movement is fueled by rhetoric that echoes the paranoid ravings of the most extreme right-wing nutcases and echoes of mindless radicals of times gone by.

When tea party leaders talk about the threat of “socialism” and call for “a new revolution” and vow to “take our country back,” they can say they are simply using vivid metaphors. However, they fail to forget that in other countries, even discussing creating such a gathering can lead to jail sentences of a rather long period of time; in this country we have our freedom of speech, right to assembly and so forth and so on.  No where in our laws exists statues to riot or create violent mobs.  We should treat this right with reverence and respect.

And further, does anyone doubt that the tea party movement attracts the kind of people who take the words of this ‘rhetoric’ literally?

Organizations such as the Anti-Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center have documented the troubling rise of right-wing militia and “patriot” groups.  In addition, these kinds of groups are usually well monitored by the federal enforcement agencies for a reason.  Remember Timothy McVeigh and Oklahoma? Political leaders who appropriate and reinforce the extremists’ language — who urge angry people to “reload” — are being reckless and quite frankly, all together too dangerous.  It is my opinion they are being, well, quite stupid as well.  It is a simple fact that inciting mobs is not a good way to remove an elected official in a democratic country from office.  Just because he or she has what you want.  They must stop this madness before things go to far.  There are more intelligent ways to solve the issues we face today.

Summer Movies – Entertainment or Just Business? Part 3 of 3

Well ladies and gentlemen, the time has come for me to wrap up this three part article about the need and greed of Hollywood. It’s plain and simple…the more Hollywood gets, the more they want, and the more we crave. I guess it’s a vicious cycle where in a sense, we all win. They get more business, we get more entertainment, and well, everybody is a winner! Yes, I know it’s not that simple or easy, but why can’t it be? The end result could be that simple, so what more shall we ask for? Before I depart, however, I would like to say that it’s been a pleasure writing about what I am most passionate about. Movies for me are what they are for most people, which is a sense of relief, and an escape from reality for around two hours (unless if you’re watching the four hour Director’s Cut of Dances With Wolves, which I highly suggest against….Best Picture? Really? Come on!). Not only are movies something that I love, but I have a passion for them. Passion is a very important thing to have, to be passionate about something, whether it’s painting, writing, biking, hiking, or just laying out in the sun and enjoying the weather. My passion for watching movies really fulfills me, and even if I watch a movie that is just absolutely horrible, I do not take it as a complete waste of time. Since my family and friends truly confide in me having great movie taste (since I’m the “Movie Guru”), watching a bad movie is like saving them time.

Recently, I have started to be more passionate about something else as well: 104Inc. 104Inc. is an unbelievably new, innovative, and technologically advanced website that seems to be the new wave of the future. What other company allows you to actually build it from the ground up and even have the opportunity to be a part of, without even an interview? None!
